Instagram used to allow only one image size and it was very easy to optimize your posts in that format. Nowadays, there are Instagram stories, IGTV, Instagram Live and you need to optimize your posts dimensions for all of them. We know it can be overwhelming sometimes and that is when you would need a little advice.
Aspect ratio (like 4:5, 9:16) is the width of a picture in relation to its height, while size (1080px, 320px) is the number of pixels in the height and width of your picture. Instagram supports photos and videos that are between 320px and 1080px and will automatically enlarge or size down pictures if they have different dimensions. Moreover, when you share a post, Instagram stores multiple sizes of that post so it gets displayed 1.81-2.24 times smaller than the original. So you should always make sure that your posts dimensions fall into Instagram aspect ratio guidelines and share the highest resolution photos and videos.
Instagram Image Size #1: Photo Posts
Instagram photo posts can be shared with a square, horizontal, and vertical orientation. For a square, that is the most popular size, your picture should have a ratio of 1:1, and 1080px by 1080px. For a horizontal orientation (landscape), you can go as far as 16:9 and keep the height of a picture at least 1080px. For vertical (portrait), keep your photo 4:5 and 1080px by 1350px.
Instagram Image Size #2: Instagram Video Posts
Like Instagram photo posts, videos can be shared with a square, horizontal, and vertical orientation. And other requirements are pretty much the same as for the photos.
Instagram Image Size #3: Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories are different from photo and video posts. They don’t have and strict aspect ratio and size guidelines. You can share anything if it’s dimensions fall between 1,91:1 and 9:16. Most people prefer their stories to take up the whole screen without any borders which would be 9:16 aspect ratio and 1080px and 1920px in size.
Instagram Image Size #4: IGTV Videos
IGTV is now not only for vertical but also for horizontal videos. You can now upload a vertical video with an aspect ratio 9:16 or a horizontal video with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Meaning the size of your IGTV videos should be between 1080px by 1920px (for vertical) and 1920px by 1080px (for horizontal). For IGTV cover photo use a picture of 1:1.55 ratio and a size of 420px by 654px. When talking about IGTV 1 minute preview that Instagram allows you to post on your feed it will be cropped to 4:5 for Instagram feed and when it appears on your profile grid, it will be 1:1.
Instagram Image Size #5: Instagram Live Videos
Instagram Live is meant to be shot vertically and it is not prerecorded so the aspect ratio will always be the full width and height of your screen (which is usually 9:16).
